About
The Artist - Nikeeta McDonald
I am a Contemporary Aboriginal artist whose work is grounded in culture, connection, and lived experience. My art is a way of telling stories, both personal and collective, drawing on themes of social and emotional well-being, resilience, and healing.
Through my lived experience with mental health, art has become an important tool for reflection and expression. It has supported me through challenging times and continues to be a way for me to process, understand, and share my journey in a way that feels safe and meaningful.
My family has been directly impacted by the Stolen Generations, and I carry the ongoing effects of dispossession and intergenerational trauma. These experiences have shaped both my perspective and my practice, influencing the way I understand connection, identity, and healing.
My practice is centred around the use of movement, pattern, and symbolism to represent connection to community, to culture, and to self. I often explore the idea that healing is not linear, using flowing pathways and interconnected elements to reflect the journeys between crisis, support, and strength.
Circles within my work represent yarning, shared knowledge, and the importance of coming together as mob.
I am passionate about creating work that reflects the strength of Aboriginal people, the importance of cultural identity, and the role of community in supporting wellbeing. My artwork aims to honour these connections while creating space for storytelling and healing.
This work is deeply personal to me, and I am committed to creating art that is culturally respectful, meaningful, and grounded in both lived experience and community connection.
